Let's start with cutting a family members hair. Now for doing just a single length cut, brush all hair straight back, make sure to wet hair completely. Use a comb to section hair. Part about an inch of hair (width wise) in the middle back part of the head. Don't hold the ends too tight, you want the hair to lay naturally so it continues to look straight. Cut about half an inch. This will be your guideline. From this point you continue to separate the hair, and take a piece of your guide at all times. After all the hair has been cut, comb all of it back again, and check the line.
Now, if you want to add short layers to your hair, one quick and easy way to do this, is wet your hair, flip your head upside down, use a comb to make sure all your hair is combed and even. Cut a straight line in your hair. Once you flip your head back up, you will now have short layers.
A little tip as well, if you bleach your hair at home, after you are done you can use the remaining bleach to clean your sink, counter tops, showers....anything that needs to be cleaned. It will leave your sink sparkling.
